Jesus said in Matthew 22:37–40, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” The most important relationship we have in life is the one we have with the Lord. When our relationship with God is non-existent or out of order, everything else in our life will be misaligned, including our other relationships.
Think about a computer that’s not plugged in to its power source, or when a phone’s connection is slow because too many apps are open. That’s what happens when we allow other things to interfere with our relationship with God. When we can’t hear God speak to us, or when we feel He’s far away, It’s not that He moved. We did.
Today, many of us, even Christians, have replaced our relationship with the one true God with other gods we bow to like Facebook, TikTok, Google, and our favorite content creators we worship. These modern idols clutter our spiritual walk and interfere with the closeness we should have with our Heavenly Father. Truth be told, sometimes it’s far easier to watch or listen to our favorite minister than pick up our Bibles, spend time in the Word, and sit in God’s presence and pray.
And that’s why so many of us wonder why our relationship with others are in trouble. That’s because when our vertical relationship with God is suffering, it impacts the horizontal relationships we have with others. The most important thing we can do is start at the top with God. We must examine where our relationship with Him has glitches, learn how to reset it, determine where it needs an upgrade, and love Him without any gaps.
Relationship Glitch: Relationship Glitches cause Relationship Gaps
Check your relationship with God today, are you close to Him and closely connected or not plugged in to Him at all? Examine anything else you are potentially putting ahead of God that is affecting your intimacy with Him, because that will eventually impact your relationship with others.
Relationship Reset: Real Repentance resets the Relationship
Is your relationship with God in trouble because of a sin, or not doing something He’s asked you to do? If so, it’s time to repent and turn things around. And remember this: Repentance is more than turning from the wrong you’ve been doing. You must pivot toward Jesus. Starting today, choose to detach yourself from the world’s distractions and plug back into the one true power source; God, Himself. Clear the clutter in your life and start over with Jesus, one day at a time.
Relationship Upgrade #1: Total Devotion requires Daily Dependence
God isn’t looking for a joint-custody agreement with you and the things you love in this world. You can’t have a relationship with God on Sunday and reserve your weekdays for worldly pleasures and entertainment. Being a Christ follower means that you have a dedicated daily rhythm with God – 24/7, 365 days a year. Dependence on Him must become your way of life, not a side hustle. Make your relationship with God a priority, morning, noon, and night, so dependence on Him becomes your way of life.
Relationship Upgrade #2: Love God without Gaps
No matter how long you’ve been a follower of Christ, whether you’re new in faith or a seasoned believer, your relationship with God can always use an upgrade. Your number one relationship with Him will need intentional care, love, devotion, and attention. Put Christ first, give Him your whole heart, and upgrade your relationship with Him starting today.
So, here’s the bottom line. Choose to love God without any gaps. Repent and reset. Remove the glitches. Upgrade to total devotion. And when you do, your other relationships will start to align because you have intentionally put them in their proper place — under God. This week, choose to spend quality time with the Lord, so you’re total devoted to Him and not distracted!
