When Your Faith Faces a Glitch

Have you ever felt like your mind, soul, and body were running on empty, unresponsive to the things of God and drained of power? If so, you are not alone. It is a lot like when your phone, whether Android or iPhone, freezes or will not turn back on no matter how many times you try to restart it. That is what happens when we disconnect and drift far from God. Without a continual connection to Him as our power source, our spirit can grow cold, our relationship with God suffers, and eventually we become unresponsive to the Kingdom work He has called us to do.

Jesus made it clear that our relationship with God takes first priority over everything and everyone. In Matthew 22:37–38 He said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the greatest commandment. In other words, our soul needs to experience a deep, committed love for our Heavenly Father.

Remember that famous song from 1977 called "How Deep is Your Love?" by the Bee Gees? It is still a fan favorite today. Sometimes we need to ask ourselves that question when it comes to examining our relationship with God. How deep is your love for Him? Which stage are you experiencing  in your relationship with Him right now? Take a look:

Relationship Glitch: A deep soul love requires a relationship, not rituals. When we settle for just going through the motions without staying close to God, our heart and soul fall out of sync, leading us to experience “conflicted heart syndrome.” For example, God may call you to forgive someone, but because you haven’t been in a close relationship with Him, you don’t feel like forgiving and lack the power of the Holy Spirit to do what He’s called you to do, resulting in a glitch. It’s like trying to launch an app on your phone, but it will not open because the battery is drained.

Relationship Reset: A reset is initiated by God’s grace, not by the guilt we feel when we have done wrong. Psalm 23:3 says, “He restores my soul.” Jesus gives us the reset we need to get plugged back into God’s power source through the Holy Spirit. We don’t have to go through life feeling guilt, when our hearts are pure and turned toward the Lord. Jesus can give us the reset we need to get recharged!

Relationship Upgrade: Our faith walk was never meant to stay the same. We will face peaks and valleys, but we should never remain empty when it comes to our connection with God. Each day our relationship with Him should grow deeper. Sometimes our relationship with God needs an upgrade. This happens when we choose to connect closer to Him by engaging in more prayer, reading His Word more often, and choosing to obey even when it’s hard, so His power can flow through us in new ways.

So, here is the bottom line: live like you love the Lord. Don’t just show up to church on Easter or Christmas, or quote a Bible verse or two when you feel like it, but choose to give Him all of you, every single day.
